The instrument is suitable for height measurements: it is used with the stars, "targets" the star directly through the straw, while the 'height of the sun' s shadow of the hole of the straw must be projected on a horizontal surface. You can determine the latitude of several locations targeting the North Star. To measure the height of the Sun will calculate the average the values. Not sighting the sun directly in this way, unless you provide special solar filters and absolutely safe.
